Tom, I think what you've done with Diamonds might be practical with Boelens.

captnemo May 06, 2009 12:47 PM

I concur.

Kevin, Mike is a great guy to deal with and I have several Boelens from him that are doing great and growing well! I wish you much luck with yours! Great snakes keep the pictures coming. I believe Mike said they were feeding well already but if you have any problems and I can help email me.

Tom, you should get some if you have the room in those outdoor cages, once they get large enough. I would have bought more this year but space is getting out of control. Especially with Boelens that get quite long and need larger cages. My older ones are over eight feet now!

Jay, why don't you have any now?

Jaykis May 06, 2009 02:13 PM

"Jay, why don't you have any now?"

Tom, your snake pockets are deeper than mine I still need to replace that female BHP I got from you that met with a freak accident. I found out a dead rat can still kill a snake

Boelens in the future, maybe.

Kevin / LegacyLine -- They are great looking ones, you must be thrilled!

Tom Crutchfield -- I'll join the throng. When I first saw the pics of your outdoors cages I thought "snakes natural sun = diamonds and boeleni !

Yep. Get's pretty cold at the altitude that they live at at night. Pretty warm during the day, also.

from what i'm told though they should be 88-90 day and 80 at night until you breed them then drop the temps, a few people drop the temps to 60-65 every night there are many different answers......

Jaykis May 07, 2009 06:28 PM

It gets much colder than 60 where they're found.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD May 07, 2009 06:52 PM

I've been where they occur and it gets about 50 degrees some nights with a wind blowing, cold as hell. Durn if you guys haven't about talked me into buying some.....Just what I need, another difficult project...lol

yeah thats whats confusing me on what temps to really use for theses guys some keep them warm and some keep them cooler i'm just going to stick with the 88 day 78 night for now more input would be awesome concering temps for these guys the more info the better

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD May 07, 2009 08:41 PM

They are black because they need to bask and heat up fast in the day because of the cold nights. After one very cold night I temp gunned a basking Diamond this January and it was 96 degrees and still basking. My guess is that they like most herps need to be able to CHOOSE the temps they want to be and not kept at the temps you THINK they want to be. On all my herps I try to give them a WIDE range of choices and not decide for them. After all they KNOW what they need and we're just beginning to realize what these parameters are. THE KEY IS CHOICES MADE BY THE KEPT AND NOT BY THE KEEPER. THEREIN LIES MOST PROBLEMS AND REASONS THAT SOME SPECIES ARE "HARD" TO BREED. WE DON'T GIVE THEM CHOICES....

I agree, Tom. People forget that just because an animal lives in the tropics that it isn't warm all the time. In this case, altitude is the deciding factor. There are mountains in New Guinea...
