Well I guess we were all right...babies!

TenorGoddess May 05, 2009 06:58 AM

I still can't believe this is real. I came home feeling tired from work and talked with Vic about our work days, etc...I felt a tiny bit queesy but then realized as we lay there talking, I hadn't checked on Miss Hector yet (although when I reached in for the paper towels to wash my face, I smelled something that was similar to "oh someone needs a cage cleaning". I mentioned to Vic that I hadn't checked on her but I'm sure she'd be fine until morning...he then said sweetly "do you want to go ahead and check on her real quick?"
Now I had dreams recently that I'd go check and see babies, but it came true!!!! ;D
I called to Vic saying "Vic! You've got to see this! We've got babies!!" :D His response was a smile and "I'll see you in a few hours then, have fun." hehe ;D
OMG! I can't believe it's real! I'm so tired it just feels like it's a dream I'm going to wake up from. Miss Hector is doing great. She's super skinny but will get a meal tomorrow. Right now she's rehydrating and has a nice hide box.
I just gently removed them into a clean, nice warm cage with damp paper towels so they can emerge fully on their own and a water bottle nearby to spritz them during the day for the next couple days.
Thus far, they are "normal" in appearance and at the very least, 100% het for type II anery! No telling what will come out since Miss Hector is so dark herself...maybe when they are old enough to breed, I'll know! ;D
For now, I'm just so elated, my first litter of boas!!!! I'm never going to forget this!

Congrats on the babies but only 5, thats a small litter. How old/ big was mom.

TenorGoddess May 05, 2009 11:47 AM

Yes while I would agree that 5 is a small litter, she is an adult nicaraguan boa. But, one of the reasons I wanted to breed her is because she's super melanistic and topped out 3 years ago at her present size, which is just under 3'. She's always had a NICE muscular build so this was a pretty sizeable litter for her. That and she's a first time mom. More than likely, her next litter will be bigger but hey, I'm just happy that she and the babies are healthy. If I only got one from her and she and the baby are healthy, I'm perfectly happy with that.
The babies are also much bigger than I anticipated coming from a ~3' nic. The pair of raise ups I bought from a friend were smaller than these kids. Maybe that has something to do with it being big babies...again, no clue! I'm a first timer. hehe ;D

Hugs,

Amanda

There is nothing as rewarding as having babies for the first time, a truly unforgetable expeience.

It always seems like it takes a little while before it sinks in and then the challenge of deciding which ones to keep.

Fun stuff, best wishes to you and some big grins coming from Kansas city

That first baby on top in the first pic certainly is dark
Possibly an Anery.
I don't remember the details of this breeding?

Yeah at first I was thinking that too..not sure as they are still in their goobags. The breeding was of a type II anery nicaraguan male to a melanistic female that no one really knows "what" she is genetically. I bought her back in 2002 as a juvie and raised her since. She's always, since the day I bought her been silver and black straight up with only a handful of scales in her tail that had any "red" pigment...meaning, those few scales are black at the base and burnt orange at the top. So, I didn't think she was an anery persay, but who knows? I won't know until first, the babies clean up and shed so I can see them and even if they are normal in appearance, what's to say the mom still isn't holding a nice recessive form of melanism? Tough to say but will be fun to find out!
They are all at least 100% het for type II anery. :D

Congrats! I still waiting for my first breeding success.

TenorGoddess May 05, 2009 02:31 PM

It'll happen man. Trust me, quite a few times I doubted I'd ever be able to breed boas but I just kept trying. They'll do it when their time is right.

Hugs!

Amanda
