Need advice on Aldabra

dav46 May 05, 2009 08:41 AM

I have been searching the web for some captive care on Aldabra's and have had no luck. With the increased frequency of them showing up for sale I would think there would be more info out there. I have been keeping reptiles for 30 years and kept numerous species of tortises including adult sulcata's (in the past) and am leaning towards getting a young aldabra. What I have read so far they are a pretty hardy tortoise and do well in captivity if provided the space. I live in SE Georgia so we have warm temps and decent humidity during the summe months so keeping outside is not a problem. Anyone have any experience with these I would love to here some opinions. Compared to sulcata are they easier on the landscape (sulcata's dig those lovely deep burrows everywhere). Is the diet like that of the Sulcata, more grasses and hay based?
Love to hear from some current owners.

yes i had the same problem when i was looking to get one. there are no web sites that have any good info on them that i know of if somebody knows of one maybe they can let us know. what i know has been told to me by other aldabra owners that i have talked to on the phone and at shows and this is what i have done. i have kept my aldabras diet the same exact diet as a sulcata, high fiber and such. as far as them grazing he definatly does a lot of that. i never see him dig or have evidence in his pen that he is. he however does go into his mud wallow from time to time. some people have said that they have problems with theirs going back into there heat houses in the winter and have to check on them every night. i have not had this problem but do check on him every cold night to see that he made it in alright. as far as there cold tolerance they have a greater tolarance for it than a sulcata. in that reguard i would compaire it more th a burmese moutain tortoise. how accurate i am on that idk but just kinda of a personal observation. all in all so far i have been problem free with him thus far(knock knock). i have several tortoises i breeding projects and several that i breed and sell locally and the aldabra is the only one that i really dont have any plans of breeding. i just think they are neat and my girlfrind really likes him too. she laughs at how goofy he is and how his butt dosent fit in his shell! i hope this helps and hope you get the info you need.
