I haven't heard much buzz about this one yet, and just read about it yesterday. Let me know what you guys think.

"This bill seeks to BAN the sale of animals that are NOT "traditionally" sold through pet shops. This would include many different animals INCLUDING Herps. This is an attempt to end ALL Reptile Shows and "face to face" sales that are the basis for much of how the middle and high end of our market distributes animals. It would eliminate almost ALL sales except from pet shops. Reptile Shows and open air auctions/sales would come to an end in CA."

But it only starts in California were it ends is up to us!

I alreday emailed and called the reps and politely told them how I felt.

I have responded by email as of last night, phone calls will be here and there since I'm at work, but they will get done.

Yeah, already did the email thing, problem is (and the same with all emails to legislators) if you don't live in their specific district, they won't accept your email. Saw the same thing with HR669. So, the phone is a key tool because the staff answers the phones!!!!

E-mail and call these reps /committee
members out in CA.
Soon it will happen in your state and
you will want help from everyone.

IMO the real problem with this bill is twofold....

First, it's poorly written and could be interpreted to include reptile and other animal shows indoor or outdoor.

Second, would make it illegal to sell or deliver any animal(s) anywhere other than private property. For example meeting up at a neutral public location including any parking lot or street or any other outdoor location.

I especially make sure to meet folks I don't know, or that I am only familiar with via business, elsewhere than my home and shop; for the same reasons most folks don't advertise where they keep and breed. One, if it gets out just how many I have (especially since I live in town), it only takes one or two folks with a reptile issue to cause to get the whole neighborhood riled up. Two, theft of course. Who wants somebody they don't know very well to know where they keep thousands of dollars worth of animals?

I don't live in California, but I'm guessing it is going to be a nationwide threat at some point. What a drag for all of us... definitely worth pursuing now before the bill settles in and spreads!

Los Angeles City already has a local law just like this. Is that why there are no reptile shows in Los Angeles city zoned areas? There are shows in Los Angeles county, such in the city of Pomona, but none that I can think of is LA city areas. Anyone?

I don't think this would ban reptile shows at indoor facilities where admission must be purchased.

I agree it does make illegal the parking lot transactions and such. Where I live in So Cal, local laws have been in place for many years prohibiting such activity.

A recent email points out the definition of "swap meet" umder the Business and Professions Code makes it clear that the term "swap meet" and "flea market" are interchangeable and applies to both "outdoor" and "indoor" events whether or not the event is "inside a building or outside in the open."
