Moonglow vs Snow ??

rainbowsrus May 05, 2009 01:26 PM

I know this has been hashed through before but can't seem to get my search function to work on 2008 archive???

In a litter where both are possible, how do you tell Snows and Moonglows apart? What specific traits or combination of traits will show the difference between the two?

And is this more obvious after first shed?

I have my own thoughts but second guessing myself (again) so looking for other inputs.

Hi Dave-

One of the more obvious ways to tell the difference (for me) is to look for outlining "rings" in the tail pattern. Kind of when compairing an Albino to a Sunglow...know what I mean? Also another way is to look for the traditional "Bow ties" in the pattern. Just my 2 cents....

If you're still unsure....send them my way for a couple seasons until we're sure what they are lol.

Take care-

Hey Ryan, That's exactly what I thought. Problem is my latest three all have no rings around the tail blotches = Moonglows.

But, one has very pinched "bowtie" saddles, one has slightly pinched saddles and the third does not look like pinched saddles at all (to me). Will have to get pics up but photographing these gems is hard.

Part of my wonderment is beating the odds so much on Moonglows/Snows with my DH x TH pairing. Two litters from the same pair totalling 20 babies and 4 appear to be Moonglows. 1/32 odds says I have a 62.5% chance of having one Moonglow, same odds on having one Snow. Four total Albino/Anery babies is more than 3X the odds (on Albino/Anery alone) and all four being Hypo as well, Moonglows, is mindblowing!!

Don't anybody pinch me, I'm liking this dream!!!

The moonglows are almost purely white, the snows have yellow markings.
