housing help, please

buffysmom Sep 12, 2003 10:54 PM

I have a pacman frog & today purchased a Dwarf African Pixie. I have them housed next to each other in a divided terrarium. There is a one-inch gap at the top, that I didn't think would matter. Well, within 3 hours, the pixie had hopped/climbed/whatever over to the pacman's side! I have seperated them in emergency tanks while I add a strip of plexiglass to fill the gap. My question is, do I need to add a background or something on the divider so they can't see each other? Is that why the pixie jumped the fence?

It's best if you just house them separately in tehir own 10 gallon aquriums. The chances for spreading disease to each other it far to high to have them in a divided tank like that. And yes cover 3 sides of ther tanks with a back ground so they feel safer.

I built this tank myself so they'd each have more room than a 10 gallon, but in a more efficient way for my shelving. I tested the enclosure for watertightness, so I don't feel they'll be any more likely to spread disease in this setup then they would in 10 gallons side-by-side. I fixed the gap & the sealant is drying now (of course they'll stay in their emergency enclosures until it's dry & ready to go). Thanks for the feedback on the background, I'll get some tomorrow. Anyone else have input as well?

The diseases may be airborne as well, so at least quarantine them away from each other for 90 days before doing the split tank set up.

I have a number of species in tanks divided with twinwall polycarbonate.

This was for the same reason as you - more space. Just make sure the divider is tight, fills the tank and seal the gaps with silicone aquarium sealant. Another advantage of twinwall is that it is an effective visual barrier - these frogs will definitely be stressed if they can see each other.
