Pics of monitor's spurs please?

sdslancs May 06, 2009 09:00 AM

I am interested in seeing the difference in monitor's spurs.
Esp' Sobek's (being a known female)so Svar, if you have time please?

This is my adult male albig- in case you're wondering what I'm talking about.

I'd like to see pics of any monitor's spurs, if you're able to get close enough?) Thanks!

Thanks for posting those. Sobek's look the same as Brutus, but his are more pronounced due to his 'maleness')
I can't see Shadow's, I think they're hiding under his shedding skin?
I wonder what they're used for? Since males and females have the same thing?
Maybe there's differnce between the male's and fem's, but we aren't able to see it?
Perhaps they protect the heavy tail/vent area, as it drags on the ground, cause the patches feel harder and slightly raised?

I think they are, or have to do with scent marking. Usually the males point forward because of the tail base being thicker, and the females face almost downward.
On ackies the males are more noticeable or have one or two more than females, but they are spurs (thorn shaped), the males usually have around 5 or so spurs, and females sometimes 4 on each side. Mostly though its best with them to just notice how one is more pronounced than the other.

I forgot if I asked you this already, but are you able to locate the two bumps pictured on my smaller Albig below, on Sobek?
I've yet to see those on 'any' other lizard and have done a thorough check on Brutus without any sign of them. Trying to figure out if only females have them? They don't seem to be visible until the leg is extended forward a bit.
