Question for Brian Sharp and other breeders

Vtherpster Sep 12, 2003 11:32 PM

I was just reading in the KS classifieds Brian said that he breeds successfully year round. I also think Marcus Jayne said they cool down for a six month time period and breed throughout.
Is the secret not with breeding seasonally but in proper health and wieght of the animals with any chosen time period for a cool down to be able to breed anytime? I'm sure the big houses have been doing this for years, yet some sell breeding videos to the contrary. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks

I have a clear and cut breeding season. I do not breed year round. I start cooling in October and by the first week in August everything is hatched out. Last year we produced 18 clutches. 90% of my females ovulated in March and April. We stop breeding the end of April. The boys get a rest. The females lay and go the the Markus Jayne Spa to be readied for the next season.

There are many breeders that do breed all year round and have great success doing so. I try to copy the weather conditions in Ghana where the breeding season in the wild is much more condensed. I prefer a more compact season. It gives me more stages to look forward to. The best by far in my books in establishing a condensed season is Ralph. He's got it pegged.
