Discolored (green/yellow) scales on lip

knigh006 May 06, 2009 10:23 PM

I do not think this is mouth rot. I opened his mouth and he did not show any red discoloration or swelling. It looks like it is possibly a scab of some sort.

Can anyone give any suggestions as of what this may be? Should I be worried enough to take my ball to the vet?

Do you use newspaper? I do and I get all kinds of funky colors on my Albinos and white bottom snakes from the ink on it. If the snake is acting healthy and is eating normal I would try and wait it out for a shed cycle. That would be the safest and most inexpensive way to see. If the snake is acting weird or not eating normal isolate it and consider the vet. But the vet is the last thing I would consider unless you know an excellent one. And for some funny reason when you are bringing your snake in they like to double the price on your visit. It is funny. The guy I see for my dog wont charge me for an office visit for Thunders annual check up but if I want to bring a python in it is 80.00 to walk it through the door. And then he admits he does not a thing about them. But I do consider him an excellent vet probably the best one I have ever gone to in Denver CO.

Bill

He shed about a week ago and I fed him on Monday and he ate fine. Ive got one of those rock caves in his cage and I think maybe he has been rubbing his face on the inside of it. Ive noticed he was rubbing his face alot on the cage last nite. I use newspaper in his cage. I was worried about possible mouth rot, so I took him to the vet this morning. Had to leave him though, and no word yet....

It is most likely a scab.

Just watch it until the next shed, and if it is still there and you are still concerned, then you can take him to a vet.

agreed. It could also be a piece of retained shed skin. You stated it is rubbing alot so it makes me think that its a piece of retained shed...
