Amateur Rodent Breeder Dilema

burrabit Sep 13, 2003 12:26 AM

I got 3 females and 1 male at a reptile show a couple weeks ago to use to breed and supply me with pinkies,
But they seem to have fleas and scratch themselfs really bad, its a very vigourous itch they have and they definately have some type of flea or parasite like that.

One of the females i found dead tonight so I put them in a fresh cage with a new water bottle and all

but im wondering if i should release them in the wild or euthonize them, is it a bad idea to keep them when they obviously have fleas and possbily disease??

Thanks

Do not let them go. they are not wild animals. If they have fleas you must treat them for it. what color are the bugs? How big, do the hop or just crawl. If they are fleas clean the cage very well and wash the animals is flea shampoo made for kittens or bunnies, but water it down and let it sit on the animals for 5 minutes or so. If the bugs dont hop you probley have mites. They are very small, pinhead size color from black to brown to red (filled with blood) treat same as for fleas but wash the case very well with a 1/2 bleach 1/2 water mixture. Wash everything, water bottle food bowl toys if any and throw away anything that is made from wood.
