Uro hates me touching his tail....

Karu May 24, 2003 06:56 PM

Has one else notice their Uromastyx hating their tails being touched? I was trying to tame him today and I was petting his back. When I got to the base of his tail he flicked his tail at me. He lets me touch lower on his tail but not the base. Is this normal or is my uro just crazy?

Yes my one female does that as well. If I touch her tail she starts whipping it around like an alligator----Mike

The reason the uros don't like their tail touched is because it is their defense mechanism. If they are being pursued by a predator they try to get into a cave or hole of some type and then they swing that powerful, spikey tail as a club to hopefully keep from being eaten. I think it is just natural for them to do this. Maybe in time when they are completely comfortable with you they won't do it anymore.
