Tip of the hat...

...to FR.

This MBK had shed almost 2 weeks ago, and was visibly cruising and looking for a place to lay. She had a lay box in her enclosure, but just wouldn't use it. I went out and bought a styrofoam cooler, filled it with ground coconut, and put her in there. She escaped twice, obviously unhappy. I went back, read your posts, and realized what I was missing. I added sand and sphagnum moss to the coconut and buried her lay box into the mix. As soon as I put her in last night she started burrowing and voilà - this morning we have a clutch!

I know this could be done on a grander scale, but it sure was fun just experimenting with it! I'm sure I will build on this in the years to come.

Thanks Frank!

Congrats, the eggs look good, I hope they hatch well.

Yes, you have a little work to do, but even what you did helped. I think deeper and dryer would be of help. Good luck

Thanks, Frank. I put it all together very much on-the-fly because I was becoming concerned for her. I appreciate the feedback, and will make adjustments in breeding seasons to come.

I am still looking for Coconut husk all over the south. None of the horticulture places carry it and and neither do their suppliers. I have looked through 3 catologs to order it from distributors throughtout AL, GA and S. Carolina and NONE have even heard of it. The closest thing they g=have is coconut husk carpet.

Thats' what you get for being stuck in the south. We have no Jack-in-the-box or In-And-Out Burger either.

So i bought a pine and hardwood mulch and mixed it with sand. Hoepfully this will mimic the coconut hust , peat and sand.//I dunno(?)

Have you tried Petco or PetSmart? They sell it in compressed blocks called "Bed-a-Beast". You can probably find some deals online for bulk, also.

Where in the South are you? I have found it in most garden centers in my area.(SE TX.) I have seen it in lots of garden centers in the Houston area.

Bed-a-beast, plantation soil (exo-terra's name), Eco-earth(zoomed), Coconut coir, and on and on. It has so many names and so many distributors you are bound to find it somewhere.

lllreptile.com has it real cheap. I think three bricks of it for like $10 plus shipping... It is one of the cheapest substrates.
