chrysopelea ornate not eating

drunk_on_chivas Sep 13, 2003 03:19 AM

help! the golden tree snake that i caught is not eating.i've tried feeding it frogs and small insects but it won't eat. Caught a few house geckos but it won't it.I thought they were too big for him because it's still kinda small so i caught a small enough gecko and it still won't eat. I read that flying snakes don't do very well in captivity.Should i just let it go again?

Actually...They usually do great in captivity! It has been rare for me to find one that refused food. You live in it's habitat range? I am in Florida and Anoles have almost always done the trick for me. If those are not available...Try using a local(arboreal) species other than geckos. Flying snakes like privacy and to climbso branches are a must. Regular misting also helps. Mine do well on spagnum or cypress mulch.hope this helps.

yea i live in malaysia. it somehow found its way into my house compound. I feed it house geckos which are abundant here.Funny thing bout my snake. I have a few brances erected but it chooses to burrow under the pine shavings to sleep. This somewhat puzzles me. Maybe i should put up somemore branches to make it feel more at home....

That is typical of every one of the 3 species I have kept. A good loose substrate and/or a hide log are definitly appreciated by these snakes....(small jealous noise here) got to be a lot more interesting than S.Florida....Frank

it doesn't hide under the mulch everynight. maybe once a few nights. I think its because of the cold weather. It has been raining and pretty cold these few days.I haven't purchased those lights you guys put on top of the cages yet.Are those for light or heat? i don't need uv for vines and c.ornata right?Local pet shops here hardly sell those kinda stuff.Snake keeping hasn't really hit our country yet hehe. Is heat regulating very important? my vine and a c.ornata both live in my distribution range so does it mean that they've adapted to the weather here and i don't have to regulate the heat? will a table lamp do?

The question is...How cool is cool there. here in S.F. we can keep them year round (except the few coldsnaps that hit the 50's) without any lamps or heat. They should for the most part comfortable in their native temps as long as the daytime temps are in the 70's or up. The light is not really necessary for them. I don't use it and have healthy critters.....Frank
