need help controlling odors?

ballfreak May 10, 2009 08:53 AM

i have a small rat colony of about 8 females and one male and the stink is getting a little obvious. i have plug ins and light yankee candles in the day to mask the odor but lately i just cant get rid of it? i keep them at my job and so i can not have them smelling to bad. i use equine fresh as bedding i change bedding every 5- 6 days and sometimes keep the garage door open for fresh air but now that the heat is coming thats when it stinks. what can i do? i can not put windows i have ceiling fans to circulate the air but i think its just circulating the stink. i wish i could put a ceiling exhaust fan but my brother who is also my boss wont allow me to. i think that would be my best bet a small ceiling exhaust. the building is one of those pre fab buildings with those plastic type ceilings? any suggestions please! thanks.

I change my rats 2 times a week on the weekend a full change..I wash an bleach everything. Then during the week if it smells I do a dump out I change the bedding so it's clean and dry it's fast takes just a few and helps so much with the smell..I will also wash my rats from time to time sometimes they smell more than anything.

Flair (ecoquest) air purifiers, that would be my best guess. and try to use scented bedding, it helps with the smell as well.

I have a 100 female colony in my 2 bedroom condo . . . . No my freinds and neighbors don't smell them. Cell sorb will cut your odors in half! The next step is to either add vanilla extract or bio odor to your rats water. That's it aside from cleaning every week ta two weeks, if cell sorb is too expensive for you (it is for me due to the sheer size of my colony) then mix shredded paper in to your equine bedding at 50/50. I do that with my shredded aspen (it was the first thing that cut my odors considerably!!!

I hope this helps let me know how it works . . . .

Billy Mays here for What Odor? .................

You can have all the stinky smells trying to mask the odours you can buy, all the carbon activated filters known to man, but what it comes down to is getting in there every few days and keeping them clean. That's the ONLY way to keep odour down. Clean them often (or at least more often than you do now).

thats the promblem and im moving my rats tommorow to a cooler spot.

ssnakes May 13, 2009 09:00 PM

Rats and mice like 80 degree temps. That is the ideal temp. If you go hotter they shut down and stop production. If you go cooler, they are slower at producing.
