sphagnum moss

cochran May 11, 2009 07:40 PM

I just found a local source for sphagnum moss!Personally I don't think that $5.39 is bad for 432 Cu. in.They also have huge bags of vermiculite for the same price! Jeff

Not a bad deal. I've always used spagnum for laying and incubating substrate and have always been happy with it.

This will be my first time using it and I already like it!So much cleaner than vermiculite. Jeff

some like vermiculite some like sphagnum moss.
I personally use sphagnum moss.
It's just easier for me to guage moisture levels.
I would love to find a deal like you did.
It's expensive here and a lot harder to find then you would think.
They never have it at Wal Mart or K Mart. I usually have to go to a garden center and it's high!

Jimmy I buy my sphagnum moss at wal mart in the orchid section. there is milled and un milled i actually pay a lil more for the milled plus the 10% discount helps. Just go in and talk to the department manger for the garden shop or the asst manager over the area.

So does anyone bake their moss? I have heard of people baking it in the oven to sanitize it. I know where I get it (Walmart) they keep it outside. Any hints here folks?

Never heard of it being baked before.

I buy 3.2 cubic ft bags of it at a local garden shop and use what I don't till into my flower gardens to incubate my eggs on.
