Wet Spring = Happy Turtles

curtis9980 May 14, 2009 01:07 PM

We have had the wettest spring here in the Dallas area I can remember since I moved to Texas when I was 10 in 1991. And I'm loving it because my boxies are SO active! They stay out walking around all day, rain or not. It is so much fun watching them poke their heads into every crevice, go swimming in their new ponds and follow me around the pen waiting for a snack to be thrown their way.

To be fair, I didn't have any of them last spring, so they could have be just as active, but I don't so with the miserably hot weather we had last year. Another plus to all the rain is all the new plantings I added to the pen are really filling in.

I think the most rewarding thing since I cleaned up the pen this winter and added plants and other things is seeing all the turtles take to the ponds. One of my Eastern juvies in particular LOVES the pond. I catch him swimming in it every day, multiple times during the day. Here's a couple of pictures I caught of him today.

That looks so great. What kind of pond is that? Could you post a picture of the whole enclosure? I am always looking for new ideas.

Thanks! The ponds are just a hard-shell plastic waterfall for ponds. It just happened to be the perfect size for a boxie pond, and I got two over the winter at Lowe's for 98 cents a piece.

I have several pics of my enclosure if you just search my username in the box turtle photos section. I will post some new ones in the next week or two also.

Very nice Curtis, the pond looks great, I might have to try one of those. My goal this year is to build a large pond to move our shubinkin goldfish to, and then enclose the small garden pond and put boxies in that enclosure with a pond.
We have had some good rains but cool weather has kept mine from getting a real appetite yet, but I have a feeling they are eating a lot of wild nightcrawlers when I am not looking.

These two had just finished doing what boxies do in the spring. The male's foot was still caught in the female's shell.
