Where Humane Society Donations Really Go
Posted: 4:03 pm EDT May 14, 2009Updated: 4:20 pm EDT May 14, 2009

ATLANTA -- A Channel 2 investigation is looking into millions of dollars in donations given to the Humane Society of the United States.

A national consumer organization says the society solicits pet-lovers for money, but little to none of that money ever goes to help local shelters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
WEB EXTRA: Humane Society Statement

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Critics tell Channel 2 Action News reporter Amanda Rosseter that this isn't just consumers misunderstanding who they are giving to -- but an organization actively misleading donors to get money.

“They do their marketing very well, that's for sure,” said Trey Burley of PAWS Atlanta.

Critics say the national organization takes advantage of people who think they are giving to local shelters. DeKalb's "PAWS" shelter says there is no regular funding help from the $100 million HSUS budget.

“I think that some of the folks who donate to the national organization may be under the false pretense that that money is going to a local cause,” said Burley.

While the HSUS does work to stop puppy mills, it also gets media coverage and donations doing it. But the puppies then go to local shelters who have to pay and care for them.

“They may initialize the resources for a rescue, but again the animals go to a shelter somewhere in the country,” said Richard Rice, VP of the Atlanta Humane Society.

Critics said HSUS also takes advantage of high-profile events. After hurricane Katrina, HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle promised on national TV to reunite pets with their owners -- and raised $34 million for the cause. But public disclosures of where that money went add up to less than $7 million.

The Louisiana attorney general launched an 18-month-long investigation, and then ended it, when HSUS offered to build the state a new shelter.

The HSUS annual report for 2007 showed $120 million in revenue, including $5.4 million just from online donors.

Then there's $112 million in expenses -- most of which appears to have gone to legislation for animal rights bills. The list includes raccoons, mice, wild horses, burros and primates.

The center for consumer freedom says all worthy causes, but HSUS shouldn't mislead to get money.

So where does all the money go?

“It goes to lobbying, it goes to political contributions, it doesn’t go to pay huge staff salaries and benefits," said David Marposko with Center for Consumer Freedom.

Channel 2 Action News went to a local HSUS meeting to find out. The two hour discussion was about activist plans and lobbying. The Georgia director for the HSUS agrees that's mostly what she does.

“I think that in all of our literature, it is very explicit as to what our campaigns are and what we are doing,” said Cheryl McAuliffe, Georgia Director for HSUS. “We help where we can and focus on our programs, which are national and international.”

McAuliffe said there are just too many local shelters to help.

“I always tell people, contribute to your local shelter first,” said McAuliffe.

When asked how much her budget is for the state of Georgia, McAuliffe said she didn't have a budget and neither did other states. McAuliffe said all money is controlled from headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most successful animal protection organization. We operate four animal sanctuaries around the country and provide more support (financial and otherwise) for local animal shelters than any other organization – more than $6 million in direct grants in 2007 as well as training and support.

In 2008, we rescued and/or cared for 70,460 animals. We were formed 55 years ago to end animal cruelty that occurs on a national scale. Local animal organizations serve their communities very well and we encourage people to support them. The HSUS is very active in Georgia, particularly on anti-dogfighting efforts. We run a program designed to reach out to youth to end dogfighting in Atlanta. We are rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and meet all applicable Standards for Charity Accountability according to the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

We have more than 450 staff members working hard every day to help animals. Our undercover investigations last year revealed mistreatment of downed dairy cows slaughtered for consumption by school children and uncovered ties between national retail chain Petland and puppy mills. We have spared hundreds of thousands of baby seals from being killed in Canada for their fur. We receive no government funding for these programs. It is only through the support of millions of Americans who agree with our mission and trust us with their contributions that we are able to conduct our campaigns and programs like the ones in Atlanta and across the country.

The tyrannical outreach of HSUS

The HSUS is very modest in their statement in my oppinion.
The HSUS is a formal cooperation partner in philosophy with Dyrevernalliansen, Dyrebeskytelsen and NOAH for animal rights in Norway.
If it turns out the HSUS allegations are true, we have a reason to believe that Norwegian animal rights rganizations have been making a profit out of tramping on the rights of the responsible reptile and amphibian breeders in Norway for more than three decades.
We also have a strong reason to believe that Mattilsynet, our food safety authority has been freezing "illegal" reptiles and amphibians to death needlessly for many years. We have further reason to believe that our state church is participating in the animal rights agends and there is even some evidence to suggest that the Norwegian animal rights organizations are the puppetmasters of oppinion to a significant part of the political sphere in our Kingdom.
Because of the animal rights organizations like Dyrerevernalliansen, Dyrebeskyttelsen, NOAH, and theor cooperation partners, HSUS, Peta, RCPCA, Pro Wildlofe, WSPA, ALF and several others, There is a total ban against 99.5% of responsible reptile and amphibian husbandry since 1976.

§1. It is illegal to import, sell, buy, give away or accept or in any other manner keep as companions or as captives in other way foreign (exotic) species of mammals, reptiles, toads, frogs and salamanders.

In case of doubt it is Mattilsynet (The Food Safety Authority, currently the right authority) that decides whether an animal is concerned by this regulation or not.

In Norway it is absurd to consider keeping tigers, unless you happen to be the biggest Zoo in the country. It is considered absurd for any private individual to keep animals such as tigers or even the smallest of primates.
Oslo Reptile Park (Oslo Zoo), has been applying for dispensation to keep a small group of the smallest primates for several years without success.
At least one out of the two biggest Zoos in Norway, Bergen Aquarium and the animal park in Kristiansand, are run by directors in strong support of animal rights philosophy.
A couple of years ago the Director of Bergen aquarium had a blog against private reptile keeping in Norway. The Aquarium in Bergen also uses every opportunity to sling mud on the criminalized "reptile environment" of Norway.
If the Norwegian animal rights organizations hadn´t recieved strong support by the HSUS, Paws, Peta, RSPCA and the rest of these tyrants, I would argue that Oslo reptile park wouldn´t be having such great difficulties obtaining a dispensation to keep the smallest primates around, and the norwegian people would be allowed to keep kingsnakes, leopard geckoes and other interesting and valuable representatives of amphibian and reptilian diversity.
I would argue that the HSUS is actively participating on placing pressure and oppression on responsible animal keepers in Norway through their international involvement, not only reptile and amphibian keepers, but also keepers of other animals such as fur fox farmers, parrot farmers, wolf farmers, cat breeders and many others.
I have written to our authorities on numerous occasions regarding some of these matters, but my letters keep falling on death ears.
In respect to herpetoculture, reptiles, toads, frogs and salamanders are explicitly illegal to keep in private vivarium, butfrogs and toads are taxonomically really the same thing. The order of gymnophiona are not mentioned in our laws you may have noticed, I wrote to our Food Safety Authority, explaining that Caecilian Morphology, and that these tropical and subtropical limbless animals do not have a big potential to survive or establish viable invasive populations in the subasctic climates of Norway. Last I heard the Food safety authority, and the animal rights organizations organizations of Norway as well as their pan international cooperation associates still believe these fascinating and mysterious, threatened and forgotten amphibian snakes are a crime to conserve in vivarium.
If Plants had rights I would argue that every plant species has a right to a reserve pool of geenes in the World Seed Bank. Since plant diversity is threatened many places on earth, I regard it as prudent to safe guard seeds of all different plants in the seed bank.
Likewise, there is a dire need for establisment of bigger reserve populations of amphibian snakes and many other threatened species. Even though Caecilians are not explixitly mentioned in Norway´s reptile and amphibian ban, they are still considered illegal to keep by our Food Safety Authority.
I would like to breed extinct in the wild species but this is impossible to do in a responsible manner in Norway as long as the private keeping of all reptiles and amphibians is illegal.

I hope the rebel advocates for responsible animal husbandry in the US are able to secure international governmental cooperation to adress the significant ways in which certain animal rights organizations and philosophers harm societies across the globe.

Over the past decade we have esperienced an uncontrolled bushfire of extinctions in the diversity of reptiles, amphibians and other animal species. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to halt the extinction crisis. and safe guard the health and long term existense of many vastly beautiful and important natural habitats. Costal ground around the tropics is being peppered hard with hotels and tourist industry and coastal habitats across the globe are being hit hard by the western tourist industry, in some cases placing further pressure on vulnerable species.
The HSUS advocates further extinction of extinct in the wild species, animals who have lost their natural habitat and now find room for existense only though the efforts of responsible breeders.

I hope the individual Norwegian, American and Global citizen of today reserve some valuable time to address the injustice done to responsible animal owners across the globe, and their animals, by the animal rights advocates of the world. If our suspicions are correct, and the animal rights organizations act as significant and thus important inhibitors of conservation through commercialization of the diversity of global fauna.
I would also argue that the HSUS and similar organizations place a further pressure on wild animals by advocating unreasonable requirements in egg and meat industry, placing pressure on chicken farmers to raise the prices of eggs, and harm peoples ability to invest more money and energy into managing our Earth in a more sustainable and responsible manner.

I hope that the modern societies of Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe and America, communists, fascists, democrats and liberalists alike will rise up and make a difference in defense of the value of diversity of life on the blue pebble in Space. Before it is too late, we have to restrict the respects in which animal rights organization inhibit a more effective future global conservation practice.

Often, the normal urban citizen is not able to perceive the slight additions in legislation put in place by animal rights organizations, thus the normal citizen of today is fooled into becoming a member of the movement which halts a more effective conservation through the practice of HSUS and like minded wildlife protectionist organizations.

They owe me personally a lot of money, and they owe a lot of money to the Earths natural environments, but even so, they seem to stop at nothing in their quest to raise more funds for for their non profit organization in order to profit the extinction of extinct in the wild species which now exist only in vivarium.

The HSUS must immediately cease to fence out the responsible keeping and breeding of snakes and other companion animals we share the Earth with.

It is not cruel or inhumane to keep reptiles in captivity.
If is a fallacious argument that any tropical or subtropical reptile, if escaped, has the potential to establish a harmful feral population in areas of such Northern latitudes, climate, seasonal weather extremes, and terrain as Norway. Tropical and subtropical reptiles would not be capable of surviving in the wild long enough to establish any viable self sustaining feral population.
Put that on your Reptiweb.

Nonprofits tap online networks to raise funds

By Lini S. Kadaba

Inquirer Staff Writer
Living Beyond Breast Cancer has won supporters for one of its biggest fund-raisers with e-mail blasts, brochures, and personal calls to big donors.

But that's so yesterday.

For the first time, the nonprofit based in Haverford is posting to its new Facebook page information on this year's Yoga Unites event, which takes place Sunday. It also is tweeting on Twitter as @YU4LBBC and uploading video to YouTube.

Of course, Living Beyond also blogs, and it shares photos on Flickr, including one of women saluting the sun on the steps of the Art Museum, where the annual Yoga Unites takes place.

As a result, the number of teams signed up for the event has nearly tripled, the group reports.

That's the bottom-line promise of "social giving," which uses online networks to raise awareness and, ultimately, money. Organizations with a cause are "friend-raising" on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and elsewhere to bolster that old-as-money objective: fund-raising.

How does it work? Social giving exploits online networks, which offer exponential possibilities for building personal relationships. Once an organization makes a connection to an individual, that person can leverage his or her personal contacts - the old "friends of friends" gone viral. When campaigns also include interactive contests, creative video clips, and real-time information, donating money becomes less of an obligation and more of an experience.

Mission: The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals?a world that will also benefit people. We are America?s mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation, and neglect, and also the nation?s most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond.

Our mission statement: Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty.

Programs: The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has worked since 1954 to promote the protection of all animals. We are the largest and most powerful animal protection organization with nearly 10 million members and constituents.

We celebrate the human-animal bond, and we fight animal cruelty and abuse in all of its forms.

We work to reduce suffering and to create meaningful social change for animals by advocating for public policies to protect animals, investigating cruelty and working to enforce existing laws, educating the public about the issues, and assisting animals when disasters strike.

Our major campaigns target four primary issues:

1) factory farming
2) animal fighting and other forms of animal cruelty
3) the fur trade
4) inhumane sport hunting practices

Our other campaigns take on:

1) puppy mills
2) the private ownership of exotic animals as pets
3) greyhound racing
4) unacceptable animal research and testing practices

Our two signature programs?Pets for Life and Wild Neighbors?celebrate the benefits of the bond between people and animals who live with us or in our communities, and teach people how to solve human/animal conflicts humanely.

And finally, we provide direct care for thousands of animals at our sanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics.

OREM, Utah (AP) - Friday night law enforcement officials found the sometimes-dangerous bird that had escaped an exotic animal farm after a semi-truck crashed into the fence, injuring the animal.

Utah Highway Patrol found the bird hiding behind a shed near the end of the blood trail it had left behind.

The 2009 Legislative Session is probably the darkest hour for the animals of Oregon in my lifetime. Several of the most harmful bills I have ever seen are likely to pass.

I apologize for the tone of this post, but we must do better!!!

First of all, we are too disorganized. We did not get together and plan strategy, we did not....

***** Please Crosspost widely*************

ACTION ALERT:
Important question: do you want CA SB 250 to become law in our state? If not, two things must happen by this Thursday:
1.    Hundreds if not thousands of people – breeders, pet owners, hunters, retirees, organizations huge and small - must contact every member of the California Senate Appropriations Committee to OPPOSE SB 250 before close of business tomorrow, Wednesday May 27th
… and …
2.    Hundreds of people must show up at the Capitol Thursday by 9am – planning to stay all day if necessary – and attend the Senate Appropriations Hearing where SB 250 will be voted on sometime before close of business.
The best chance we have of stopping this bill is while it is still in the Senate.  It needs to be killed here and now! This will not happen unless everyone steps up and does their part by faxing and calling each committee member with their opposition.
Please, please make your opposition known.  You can find out more about SB 250 here:
http://tinyurl.com/ctjhxw
Here is a wonderful patriotic video created by an Alabama teenager that will be sure to inspire you to take action to protect our pets and rights!   Video at link:  An.wmv

*****Be sure to include this statement in all opposition letters so you opposition will count:

Dear Senators and Assembly Members:

I continue to STRONGLY OPPOSE SB 250 as amended May 5th, 2009.  I will continue to oppose it in all future forms.  SB250 is a flawed piece of legislation which cannot be fixed by ANY amendments.  I therefore ask to be included in the numerical individual OPPOSITION count for any Bill Analysis.  I additionally ask that my OPPOSITION not be withdrawn except by my own written consent.

Talking Points:

(Remember: this is the Senate Appropriations Committee.  State finances are the primary concern in this vote.)

·        SB 250 is nowhere near as important as schools, health programs, firefighting and police enforcement – why is it even being considered by the Senate, when Californians voted overwhelmingly last week for the State to CUT SPENDING?  It certainly is not going to sav!
e money.

o       See the most recent SB 250 Bill Analysis:

http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/09-10/bill/sen/sb_0201-0250/sb_250_cfa_20090511_112111_sen_comm.html

o       See also!
the last Financlal Bill analysis for the very similar (less draconian
) bill, 2007’s CA AB 1634:

http://www.dof.ca.gov/Legislative_Analyses/LIS_PDF/07/AB-1634-20080725094150AM-AB01634.pdf

·        SB 250 will be very difficult and expensive to enforce.  The unforeseen consequences are huge. One animal-related code violation, and local Animal Control agencies have the right to revoke and deny your license to own an intact animal in California for the rest of your life.&nb!
sp; People will take minor violations all the way to the CA Supreme Court to avoid that.

·        SB 250 offers NO EXEMPTIONS except medical where a veterinarian determines that the surgery will pose the risk of possible death for your pet. This makes SB 250 a more dangerous bill than AB 1634, which did offer some exemptions.

·        SB 250 violates pet owner property rights granted to Californians by both the federal and state constitutions.

·        SB 250 will eliminate working dogs such as those used for law enforcement and search and rescue. These dogs are routinely kept intact as “natural” dogs are better able to perform these demanding tasks.  They are often relinquished by their first homes because of too high energy lev!
els their families cannot handle … if all dogs are sterilized early in life, where will law enforcement dogs come from?

Note: there are no exemptions for law enforcement, search and rescue, or service dogs in SB 250.

·        SB 250 is an unreasonable law because it potentially defines ALL pet owners as “irresponsible” and subject to fines and having their pet sterilized as mandated by the state.

Picture this: Old dog goes for a walk.  Old dog leaves a number of piles. You clean up all you see.  Old dog leaves one more that you miss... and either AC or an AR sees you walk away from it.   Oh, horrors!!! You are now an IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNER.

Any of the following offenses will also deem you to be an “irresponsible” dog owner and subject to fines and mandated sterilization for all your pets:

·        Have a dog get out of their yard.
·        Fail to have an up to date rabies vaccination.
·        Fail to have a dog licensed.
·        Have a leash law violation.
·        Have a violation at your fully licensed, inspected kennel if you have one.
·        Have a tethering violation.
·        Keep a dog in “unsanitary or unhealthy conditions” – whatever that means.
·        Operate a business that involves dogs without a license or state tax ID number.
·        Leave a dog unattended in a car in violation of Section 597.7

SB 250 will serve to virtually eliminate dog and cats shows as well as canine performance events in California.  Millions of dollars in revenue are generated by these events locally. Their loss shall create a negative fiscal impact to local economies while reducing generated tax revenue.

The AKC Eukanuba National Championship show is moving from Long Beach to Florida when its’ current contract runs out.  That’s a loss to Long Beach’s local economy of over $65 MILLION for the 3 year contract. That’s just one show. What will happen if hundreds of cat and dog shows disappear?
