Brookise and florida kings the same thing?
Well first it is brooksi and not Brookise. Hobbiests refer them to as Brooks kings.
Albiet the "brooksi" or "Brooks" a has been done away with in nomenclature and they are all Florida kings now , or "floridana".
Originally the true "brooksi" came from South Florida canal stock. So today, Florida king affcianados liuke to call true locality South Florida kings, Brooks Kings. But there are few of us and most advertisers just call them Brooks kings. Confusing huh!
The name is misused in the general public and 95% still call all Florida kings, Brooks kings. Which is incorrect.. they are not even are locality s. dade county Florida kings being marketed as Brooks. It is incorrect to use the term Brooksi for ANY Florida king unless you are deep into them and know that S, Floridana used to be called Brooksi. Today "Brooks kings" is just a marketing lure to sell them faster.
Check the classifieds and most all of the "Brooks" kings advertised are nothing more than regular Florida kings and not s. Dade County Florida kings. If the classifed ad mentions they are from S, Dade County then we as hobbiest still like that term even though it was done away with.
I think it is better we all stick to what they really are... Florida kings. If it is a locality just list the locality (ex : S Dade County Florida king ). But these changes take time.

i like to give mine air so I just use a lid. Most of mine also have a few holes. Otherwise they get enough oxygen when I check on them to open the lid.

Ok thanks!

are there any other localities that show such a huge color difference like the S florida do?
seems to me that most every other florida king stays dark and the s. florida are the only ones that lighten up like that.....right?

The weird thing about south Florida kings you can find light ones or dark ones under the same board. I think the old canal stock from years ago almost dissapeared from the hobby when the hypo came along. When the hypo came out priced at $700. folks ditched their nice looking light colored stock. I don't see many around and not many nice ones are being found anymore.
I am sure others that collect in that area can chime in that can shed more light on the subject of light phase Floridana.

Light colored kings have been found throughout the range of FL kings. Some areas (like extreme South Florida) tend to produce light color kings, but its not a sure thing. The lightest colored kings I've seen have come from Central Florida in the Tampa area. All these areas produce light and dark colored snakes. The unfortunate thing is that kings have disappeared from most of the areas they once occupied in FL, so at this stage it is very difficult to see their true variation across the state.
In captivity, we generally see FL kings from the canefields around the southern half of Lake Okeechobee (dark colored), and selectively bred kings from the Everglades in Dade County (light colored). Both of these are South Florida locales from the former and current Everglades. Central and North Florida are not well represented in captivity.
