South American Chams?

TylerStewart Sep 13, 2003 11:34 AM

A few of the guys that I work with, swear on everything that there are chameleons living both in Mexico and Guatemala (where some of them are from). I've showed them pictures of chameleons and they all say they've seen veiled chameleons in those places. I said "well, I don't think it's technically a chameleon, but maybe some sort of iguana." They say that the people there refer to them as chameleons and they look just like (supposedly) a veiled. I then asked them if they were really slow and the guy responded "no, those are fast Mother ____ers." Now, I know they're not veiled chameleons, but does anyone have any idea what species this would be? They all want an answer because they think they're right.

well, i'm from Brazil and it's a fact that there are species of chameleons in the Amazonas, wich have the same characteristics of the most known ones, i can't tell you for sure the name of the species cause i've been outta there for quite a long time, and wasn't even into reptiles while living there, but i did a search and they describe such chameleons as fast, good swimmers, and that they even defend themselves with their tail(?)(too bad the sites are all in portuguese and most people wouldn't understand)...might be just a myth,or maybe any mutations , who knows hehe...i'll try to get some more info with contacts in the Amazonas and keep you posted as soon as i get something interesting!

i think that they are definetly wrong because people that don't keep reptiles don't really notice details and cannot distinguish one from another because one time my closeminded neighbor got in an arguement with me saying that my bearded dragons were horny toads and even with me showing literature saying that they were from austrailia she still didn't believe me and said i must no know how to take care of them if i didn't even know it was a horny toad.

well, that was the opinion i got as well, it sounded absurd, but it did awake my curiosity i shall find out more about it to distinguish fact from myth, let's see...

it might be a "helmeted chameleon," or, "forest iguana." i'm not sure.....

thats all i could think of.

I'm glad you brought this subject up, as now I know what they're talking about!
I was selling some of my chameleons at a local Swap Meet, and occasionally, I would get people who would look at my chameleons and SWEAR up and down that they had them in the wild, back in Mexico.
Of course, it wouldn't help one bit when I told them these were OLD WORLD chameleons, and not from Mexico. Their response would be that I don't know where chameleons come from, and therefore, I must not know chameleons in the first place!
Of course, these would be the same people who would say that bearded dragons are horny toads.....

lol
This is going to drive me nuts now... I had read something about a lizzard that wasn't actually a cham but was often referred to as one and also sold in a lot of pet shops as a chameleon... but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. I'll search around a bit and see if I can find that page again...
