Incubate with lids or not?

jamifi May 15, 2009 05:19 PM

I have 5 ball python eggs suprised but not totally unexpected, but I had to run get a Hobavator. My question is about using lids on the tupperware containers the eggs are in? The containers are only like 2 inches deep, thats the only ones I have that will fit... Should I use lids with them or not? I am using vermiculite substrate moistened, not soaked and running my incubator now to make sure my temps are correct. Oh BTW how long can I wait before removing the eggs from the snake? I want to let me incubator settle, but I dont want to wait too long..
Any help would be great! Thanks

You definitely will need a lid to keep the eggs and vermiculite from drying out. I remove the eggs as soon as possible, because the sooner you remove them the easier they are to separate from each other.

You should be able to find sterilite or rubbermaid shoe boxes that will fit in your hovabator. I used hovabators for 2 years before turning a bathroom into a walk in incubator and had perfect results. They work fine for small clutches, but if the clutch is too big, you need an expansion ring which gives you an additional 1-2" height (Don't remember exactly).
You will need to use the lid to keep the humidity in the tub, otherwise the eggs will dry out quickly.

Best of luck with them,

You'll also find that a standard tropical fish shipping styro "bottom" has the same dimensions, the heating lid won't rest down inside the same as it does for the hovabator if I remember right but that bottom is a few inches taller/ deeper so it does give you more height if you need it. Just be SURE it is in a place where it won't get bumped since it only "rests" on the styro "bottom" doing it that way. It works fine only if nothing moves it out of place (kids, pets, you not paying attention, you get the idea)... I did it that way using the base of the fish shipping styro, that was along time ago, before I built my walk in room.
