Herping near Carlsbad, NM

Heading out to Carlsbad, New Mexico for a few days before a trip to Big Bend and West Texas. Any tips for good nocturnal road cruising around Carlsbad? Only been there once before for one day and we drove Dark Canyon Rd (408) which was great for mammals but no snakes. Not collecting, just looking.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm heading that way in a couple weeks also. Hoping to do some hiking & herping along with seeing the Caverns. Photos only, BTW
