local snake found a nice meal OT

saagbay May 16, 2009 05:29 PM

i got the call last night from my mother-in-law asking if snakes eat other snakes or if what she was watching was mating. from her discription it sounded like one was eating the other. then i got the pictures today and i still think that. as much as i wanted to be able to tell them what was happening and who was who i still dont know that much about whats what here in NM so i dont know what type of snakes they are but hopefully someone in the other forum will id them for me

here are a few pics

sorry for the graphic blurry one but this leads me to believe that the small one is a meal and not a mate

Steven,
I think that is a Wandering Terrestrial Garter Snake eating a legless lizard (pretty sure about the garter snake, not so sure about the prey item).
Really, really interesting photos!!

hey paul thanks for the reply

i thing you right about the wandering garter, someone in the garter snake forum said the same thing

another guy over there suggested that the prey is a lined snake... never heard of it but i looked it up i i think he is right

Great pics! I didn't realize garters ate other snakes.

Thanks for sharing,
