Fire skink set up

Asmodea Sep 13, 2003 01:00 PM

Got a 40 gal tank, 3' long, 1 1/2' deep, 1 1/2' high. 5-6" of substrate, 1 part sand, 2 part soil. Loose enough for easy borrowing. It's made deep enough to come up to the top of a 1.1 gal tupperware water dish. Dish isn't a full 6" deep, closer to 4", it sits inside a second, identical one so I can lift it out and not have the hole fill in. Dish has two rocks for climbing out, a pothos vine hanging down into it, and an ultra sonic humidifier set for three 30-40 minute (inexact timer) on periods a day.

Has two branch structures that each go 6-8 inchs high. Temps on those is 85-87, temp on ground surface is around 78-81, and under the soil it gets down to 75. Overall of 69-75 at night depending on time of the year.

Two pothos plants, and four Oracaena Marginata Tricolors (tall grass). The pothos are potish things that go about inch and a half above ground level, and several inchs below it, with fully open bottoms. Grasses are set in perferated plastic tubes that are inch diamiter, and 3 inchs deep. Pots and tubes are there to protect root base from burrowers.

On top of the tank is n 8" high wooden boxish thing I build. Wooden front, sides, and top, screened back. This houses and hides the light structures so they are inside the tank. Includes a 40 watt incandesant on either end, and an uv floresent light. Hinged top allowes for easy access into tank.

Ambient humidity in the air tends to be only around 40-45 during the day with the lights on, but goes upwards of 70 at night.

Plan is for either a single fire skink, or a male/female pair. Aiming more for a pair as your twice as likly one's not burrowed.

Wow! That's an extreme setup, your skinks won't know what to do with themselves. It sounds like you've done your research as the environment parameters are all within the happy zone. I keep a pair in a 55 without any problems, so you should be able to house them in your 40 with all it's bells and whistles.

Make sure you maintain a moisture gradient in the substrate so they are able to find suitable nesting areas. Remove the eggs as soon as possible or provide the female with a separate brooding enclosure. I don't have my cage setup nearly as elaborate as your's, and my pair are thriving. Five clutches have been produced this season.

Good luck,

E
