Starting set up for new monitor

rottenweiler9 May 17, 2009 12:30 PM

I know with snakes they recommend that you use news paper for new additions to make sure they do not have any mites or bugs and to separate them from the rest of your collection for 60 days.

Do you go with the same if get a new monitor. Paper for 30-60 days.

Thank you

Jeff

It would be best to just put the 6-12 inches of dirt in right away as monitors will stress out Essy plus it wont provide any use to them.

also what kind of monitor are you getting? Good luck

JoeKahn May 17, 2009 03:06 PM

If you get your monitor from a reliable breeder, there shoud be no parasie problem.

rottenweiler9 May 17, 2009 03:15 PM

I thought about the stress factor so I am glad I asked. I am really looking at that baby blue tail from Ben S, and sway to it each minute. Thoughts?

everyone who i talked to with blue tails or other Indus type monitors said they were very skittish and hide most of the time and they will not hesitate to bite.
The one from Ben looks nice but is overpriced as you can get juvies or adults for 100-200 and its still a WC animal.

Yea, please think twice about the buy.
If you're worried about all the bad things that can happen, try going with a CBB animal. Most of the aussie dwarf monitors you see available are cbb. If you're willing to pay more then 200 for an animal... might as well wait for ackie babies to pop up for sale. I can also say that V.tristis tristis werent bad captives when I had them.

SHvar May 17, 2009 07:14 PM

If you get them from a breeder there are no parasites, if you get them from a dealer, or store, or importer, or most businesses they are all 100% wild caught, those have parasites.

So did you decide what type of monitor you are going to go with?

rottenweiler9 May 18, 2009 01:49 PM

Hahahahaha, I wish. Not yet, I am looking at Black Trees and Timor Monitors now as well. Googling everything and the care sheets, to see size and reading back on old posts. Whats your thoughts on these guys. Seems like a lot of people like the Timor but they seem shy. They will be in a basement where there is no distractions, just me when I workout and like to hang out and watch whats going on.

I use to think I wanted a monitor I could take out on ocassion, but have realized that is not good for anyone, now I just want one I can enjoy. Since I do not even handle the snakes all that often, just feed and clean.

I don't think you want a giant monitor like a black throat or a water or a real shy small one like a timor starting out. Small to medium size monitors would be ideal. I like my savannahs but they are captive hatched and kind of at the bottom rung of the monitor world...most will tell you to get a yellow or red ackie. I've seen people handle them from time to time. You will probably have to get on a waiting list thats all. Just make a determined effort and you will find some. I see you have a collection already. I guess you don't have to narrow it down to one species. You could keep two cages with two different types of monitors. Say flavis in one yellow ackies in another.

rottenweiler9 May 18, 2009 02:25 PM

Ya, everyone says go with the ackies, and from what your read about them, seems like a perfect fit. But, I also love the looks of these other ones. I almost got a black throat but have read my way out of that and same with a water.

What about Mangroves? I do know that I want CBB, even with snakes, I don't mess around with wild caught stuff.

If your not looking for handling a timor would not be too bad. Personally I have stopped trying to attempt to handle mine, because he just hates it but otherwise he is in the basement as you said yours would be, so not many people are down there often (just other reptiles). So when I go down there and sit in front of his enclosure he will watch me more than I watch him and it is quite interesting to watch. Never had Ackies though but I would take an ackie over a timor lol.

I don't think mangroves come in captive bred but maybe who knows. I saw some of them on the kingsnake classified today as well as a trio of red ackies.

rottenweiler9 May 19, 2009 12:16 PM

I will sit and wait for the following and go with what looks good first: Flavi, Flavi Cross, Black Tree, or a Cape Banded White Throat.

I don't know if Black Trees are CBB.... I think the rest of them can be found.

mhhc May 20, 2009 01:51 PM

CBB tree monitors are like hen's teeth. The only monitors that are reliably CBB are Australian species.

Cheers
