we dont know for sure what it is but the consensus is that it is some unicolor morph of california king. Thanks for your insight.
Looks like a chocolate cal king to me.
Where did you get a snake like that with no history?
Not a coachwhip is it? I had one as a pet growing up.
it sure does have that coachwhip scowl!

Yup- first thought was coachwhip, too.
Does it like to lunge at your face?

This is a tough one...I'm surprised as collectively we usually nail it quick. However, we have little to go on, and if captive bred or unusual morph, color may deceive us. Some guys guessed an Elapid...does it envenomate prey? Offer it a live rodent, maybe a rat pup and see what it does, constrict? envenomate? It seems like a detailed analysis of scale count, using a field guide would confirm or elilminate if a Lampropeltis quickly. Let us know what you decide, I am w.a. guessing its a Cal king or "intergraded" morph with MBK? A "conjucta" type/Baja cal king morph? I am skeptical about Masticophis, but its tough to call with just the limited view. I agree the head shape is rounded...the eyes don't look large enough to be Masticophis...what does the underside of the tail look like? How many subcaudals?
The head scalation is not right for a coachwhip; they have an elongate bell-shaped frontal. It looks like some oddly colored getula or maybe something totally off the wall from a different country.
