Please identify, found dead on road.

I saw this poor fellow on my way to work one morning. I have no idea how long he was in the road before I took these pictures, but he wasn't there when I drove home the night before. I'm hoping nobody ran over him intentionally. I couldn't determine what type of snake he was from looking at him, so I snapped pictures with my camera phone (the only thing I had available) and thought you guys might be able to tell. I live in Panama City, Florida.

He was rather short... maybe two feet long at most. That was hard to tell because he was in a "C" shape.

Poor little guy. Alright, thanks guys, I'll keep an eye out for them, maybe I can save the next one before he gets run over. I just don't understand what he was doing on the asphalt during the night. It was in February and even the roads were still cold.
