Petawawa's Exotic Animal Bylaw To Stay

Fri, 15 May 2009 8:17:02 EDT

It was a close vote, but Petawawa residents still won't be allowed to own exotic animals. Petawawa council voted this week to deny a request from Chuck Arnold, owner of Critters Aquarium, who several weeks ago asked that changes be made to the town's exotic animal by-law to allow non-poisonous snakes and lizards. Arnold says the pets are safe and that they pose no threat to rescue crews entering homes in an emergency, but the request was denied in a tied vote. Deputy Mayor Ed Chow and Councillors Joe Park and Treena Lemay voted to change the bylaw, while Councillor Tom Mohns, Cy Steele and Mayor Bob Sweet voted against. Under the municipal act, if a vote is tied, the motion fails.
