Pump and dimmer switch?

blackthroat001 Sep 13, 2003 01:56 PM

Sorry people, I am not much of an electrical expert that is why I would like to ask my question before I do something dumb. I have a 24-Watt 250-gph waterpump that I would like to use for a waterfall for a 136 gallon custom dart frog enclosure. The pump only has an electrical chord with no on/off switch or any device to adjust its speed. My question is: Could I use a damper switch (designed for incandescent lights) with 600 Watts capacity with my waterpump? I could connect the wires I just wanted to know if this setup would work. Thanks to all who respond!

Sincerely,

Arpad Csay

I am no electrician, but I don't see why not.

It may not work, because some types of motors can't be controlled with a variable resistor (dimmer). When you try it I would watch to see if the pump heats up. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply! I got the same answer at Home Depot from the "electrical guy". I just bought a smaller pump that can pump water at 50 gph at about 4 ft of head. It works great

Thanks again,

Arpi
