getting a monitor

Kingmorph69 May 18, 2009 08:12 PM

hi i am looking to get a monitor, and everyone's told me to get a savannah, but i don't like them. i want to get a lizard that's easy to breed and is easy to tame (or are naturally unagrassave). please help me out, thanks!

Hi,

I would do some backlogging on these forums; however, truth be told, with your requirements, your time may be better off spent with somthing other than a monitor, perhaps some snake species.

Backlogging will also allow you to see what is available and learn what those animals require to reproduce, you will likely have a better perspective about the questions you asked.

Goodluck,
Mike.

I already have two ball pythons, a blood and a burm and they're getting to boring. I want to get a monitor because they are cool lizards and i know people who have them and they say that the're amazing. I just wanted to get something other than a savannah because they are not that cool to look at.

Thanks

Then consider a black throat or white throat monitors. Those have a really good temperament better than other species IMO. I've seen so many bad temper Savannahs and Nile monitor, but all the black and white throat I've seen are really calm. Get one from Proexotics! They have really beautiful animals and are guarenteed to be healthy. Another good choice would Ackies! There smaller size make it a bit more manageable in terms of living space and food bill. Trust me Ackies cost way less when it comes to feeding. When I have my Sav, its food bill sky rocketed. He went through mice like he has been starved for months!

thanks for the advice. i always wanted a blackthroat!

What kind of space do you have available? Are you thinking in terms of a "cage" or a large custom enclosure.

so that's around 5X5 to 6X8 feet of floor space? You're pretty limited with that small of a space.

The Ackies have my highest recommendation. But none of the monitor species are "easy" to breed. They are all challenging, much more than snakes, although Ackies are one of the easier species. Still not easy : )

But a very interesting and fascinating species to work with.

We have quite a bit of info on our site, check out the FAQ and caresheet sections.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice!! is there more than one color morph of the Ackies Monitor? If so, which one looks the best?
