Blanks?....

laurarfl May 19, 2009 07:03 AM

What would cause two proven breeders to lay blanks? I was hoping for a nice orange Creamsicle clutch and paired two snakes for the first time that were proven breeders, but new to each other. I only put them together once, but witnessed the lock up.

Her gestation was fine and then she laid of clutch of 13 unfertilized eggs. Hmmm...trying to figure out what happened here.

They didn't have a strong cooling period, but I don't do that anyway. I just go with natural temps of winter here in FL. I don't know the age of my male, but he may be getting older. Just curious, I guess.

If you are sure that neither the male nor the female are infertile, then there are other possibilities. (you said the male had good fertility with another female and the female has clutched firtile eggs before from a different male, right?)
These are things I could think of off the top of my head
-You could have missed her ovulation time.
- She could have used stored sperm from last year that maybe was no good.
- How long did they breed? Did you see a "wetspot" to confirm it was a successful breeding?
- Did the female get enough food, nutrients during the season?
- Was the female overweight/obese?

Just my thoughts. Hope it helps
