couple questions

jeffboren Sep 13, 2003 02:33 PM

ok my ig is getting bigger really fast!
i got him when he was 6 inches and he has nearly tripled
iam going to make him a new cage and i have a couple questions

First the frame is an old cabinent its 8 feet high 6feet wide iam going to replace the top with metal mesh type stuff and the door will just have the edges of frame with the middle taken out and mesh put there also...how long will this last my iggy

also what size of metal mesh stuff should i get and shouldit be coated with anything like rubber

also would it be safe to run one of those misting systems they have at the proceries store in there three times a day for 20 mins?

and my last question is could i put linoleom on the sides so if he poops it will be easy to clean up?

thanks 4 any responses good or bad

From the description the height would be great up until it was aroun 5-6ft the width would be great almost the same at least to 4 ft but the one thing you did not mention is the depth. If this is just like 18 in or so deep than it won't last all that long. If it is 3-4 ft deep it could last into adult hood depending on the iguanas full grown size.

Next for the mesh we use a black plast hardware cloth or a hardware mesh coated in rubber. The main things to make sure of are that there are NOOO sharp edges either where it connects to the cage or where the squares of the mesh interconnect (no braiding with sharp edges etc. I believe it is better if I remember my meshes correctly to get a welded wire instead of braided wire then it is smooth not sharp. You do have to watch on your plastic meshes because some are very rough and sharp. We usually get the black plastic hardware cloth at Lowe;s comes in a 100ft roll for $25. It is enough for us to build a few cages as we run a rescue. We do put the coated welded wire mesh on the top though because if they hang on it the plastic does seem to sag a bit after a while. It doesn't really affect the sides as much that I've noticed. Just make sure there's lots of things for climbing and branches or shelves up high enough as I'm sure you already know!

Hope this helps!
Stephanie
