Your pictures are always great. I love the fact that you shoot the area, not just the snakes. It looks really amazing up there.

Congrats on all your finds.

Best Wishes,

Steven X

Dan, what kind of snake is that little black one, and where were those pics taken?

daneby May 20, 2009 05:40 PM

Melanistic wandering gartersnake. The pic was taken here in Cascade County, Montana.

Dan,

That Plains Garter is SWEET!
The garters you posted in the other forum are nice too.
Looks like you've got plenty of wide open space to explore.

As always, thatnks for posting,

Tim

Yea, there is alot of space to go herping in, but alot of good spots are being destroid pretty quikly arround here too. Its depressing to see area ive been going to for years being developed.

Wow, great pics. Beautiful scenery, too. Herping must turn into quite a work out with the little guy on your back like that all day, but there's nothing like being out herping with your children.
Thanks for sharing the fun with us.

Thanks Vinny! Yea, it can be hard on the back, but he loves being out, they both do.

Awesome photos as always Dan.

Which part of MT are you in?

daneby May 21, 2009 11:03 PM

Thanks Andy!
I'm in central Montana. Its crazy how different the bulls in WA look, They are awesome!

Dan Eby

Andyh May 22, 2009 11:35 AM

It is, and they vary quite a bit depending on where you are in WA as well.

We have Great Basin's, as well as Pacific Gophers.

Excuse the variation in pic size. I shrunk a bunch of them when backing them up online.

Lake Chelan. This is the "brightest" locality I've found in WA

Near Pasco, WA

Near Ellensburg, WA

And one down in AZ near Tempe

Nice ones!

Dan, you have more shots of bulls in/around water than I have ever seen, are they as water loving as they seem in those areas? I find it interesting to see such behavior as they are really desert/flatland animals everywhere else I have seen them.

Todd,
There are alot of areas arround here with no water for miles with tons of bulls arround, but in areas with rivers, lakes, ponds, creeks, & water filled ditches there are tons of them too. I've seen them swimming in ponds & rivers (its not too common though), & I've seen them cross small creeks. Alot of thier food is arround water (musk rats, baby ducks, ect...) so I think that has alot to do with it.

Ok, gotcha, that makes a lot of sense!
