Pale Grays

mikeslrsrpnts May 19, 2009 07:23 PM

Well the results are in.. I think! Only time may tell on this breeding. Bloods like to continuely amaze us with some of their funky genetics and intense color changes, I think the Pale Gray gene falls in that catagory!
This is the result of many years in the works. Tracy(VPI) imported a beautiful example of hypomelanism which she termed the 'Pale Gray' blood.

Tracy bred him with a second generation gorgeous yellow, She did not reproduce the original Pale Gray trait. But was hopeful that with the breeding of the babies it would prove out as a recessive morph.

I raised up a pair of the hets and they turned out to be wonderful looking animals that carry distinctive qualities of both the Pale Gray male and yellow female he was bred with.
With a sucessful breeding this year from my hets, the female laid 10 good eggs. This is the results so far as we can best tell...
2 Pale Grays, 4 probable visual hets and 4 66%possible hets.
Eggs hatching!

Pale Gray #1 with 66 poss het..

Pale Gray #2 with 66 poss het

Pale Gray, Probable visual het and 66 poss het..

The distinctive characteristics of the Pale Gray baby seem to be the overall exceptionally light coloration, faded black pattern on the bellies and most of all the lack of black pigment in the stripe that comes off of the back of the eye. It seems to be almost orange in color just like the original male.
I think after a first shed in a couple months and especially going into the first year of color changing, we'll have good idea of how these lil' guys will turn out!
Any questions, comments and opinions are welcome!
Thanks Mike

Great job Mike-you made them before I did!! Just wait and see how those guys turn out-I'm really keen to see them in 6 months but honestly the heads look just like the Pale Gray grandfather. They look really neat! Interesting to see the possible "visual hets" as I mentioned the "het pale grays" look almost identical-which can be a tell tale sign of a codom. That would come in really handy!! I will have to wait until next year to hopefully produce some more! Congrats!
