Dirty Beardie

mwrinkle May 19, 2009 07:58 PM

Had the Beardie out for a soak, nail clipping and overall lookover. I noticed that some scales on the underside especially on the tail discolored. Brown to black to a tinge of green. Not mites, nothing is moving and and I examined them closely under a magnifying glass to make sure she was not mite infested. I have to assume that from crawling around the cage hare and there she picks up dirt from play sand, or feces or what ever from time to time. She gets a weekly soak so this stuff must just not soak off and has accumulated after a time. Do any of you wash your dragons and if so especially on the under neath area, how do you get them to cooperate!

My Ed gets like that. He drags himself through everything. I don't have any sand or dirt in his habitat but he still gets dirty from his logs and his poop even though I try to clean it out as soon as he poops.
I just take a soft toothbrush and soak him in warm water and lighting scrub him with it. It gets almost everything off and he loves getting scrubbed too! Just make sure the tooth brush is the softest you can find!

A little 'pure' soap can be used with the brush to help get some fo the more difficult dirt. Use a soap that has no perfume or other odd additives. Ivory soap is good, or plain homemade style soaps that again, don't have anything added, like perfumes, etc. You also only need a tiny bit.

Another thought, use a separate bar of soap for your dragon's washing than you do for yourself. Or at least 'rinse' the bar after putting a little bit on the toothbrush.

I use Johnson's Baby Wash, warm water, and a toothbrush. Just don't let them drink the water!

Everyone that has asked this question i noticed used the toothbrush and found their beardies like the massage of the toothbrush on their skin. Good luck!
