Well all of my turtles are up. I finally found the last one in the yard yesterday and she has now been relocated into the enclosure. I took some pics today. Everyone seems to be happy. I have noticed that the male has been "busy" with two of the females so far.

Here's the male

Heres a pic of two smaller females enjoying their breakfast.
The female on the rock is the one I just found in the yard yesterday. She seems to enjoy her new digs.

Here are the other two females. The smaller one that is under the log is really feisty and curious. The large female and my male seem to enjoy each others company alot. She also really like the turtle food that I made up from Jeffs recipe. They all really likes it alot but she really chows hers down so that she can go and steal some from the smaller slower eaters. She blocking the smaller female in this pic from getting to whats left of their meal

The enclosure looks nice. I also have a big bully feeding female, I either feed her seperate from the others or put her aside and wait till the others are done and then put her in front of the food, otherwise she seems more interested in taking from others rather than just minding her own business and eating what is right in front of her face. It's not like their isn't more than enough food for all, but she just likes stealing, so I have to "throw her in jail" while the others eat, lol
She reminds me of that Nine Inch Nails song "been caught stealing"

Your enclosure is wonderful and your boxies are smooth and beautiful. What is the thing holding the water? It looks like a waterfall for a pond. I really love your enclosure.

vichris May 21, 2009 10:20 PM

Its a small little pond I bought at Lowes for $5. I really like your enclosure too Terryo. That is a great looking setup. I like the moss. I need to get me some too.

In the back of your enclosure you have a little wooden fence. Could you tell me what kind of wood..how big and where you got it. I live in New York...in the city, and there are no preditors. I have two little Chihuahua's and they can't climb. The only wild life I have seen here are birds...small ones. I would like to change the little wooden slots around the enclosure because I sometimes see her looking through the hole. I have a small yard with planters and the enclosure is one of the planteres. I would love to have some more property, but I guess I am really a city gal at heart.

terryo,

The posts are standard treated landscaping timbers that I got at Lowe's. They also carry them at Home depot. They come in 8 foot lengths. I cut mine in 32 inch lengths and buried them 12 inches deep. Good luck

Ya that big female is a chow hound but that little female seems to always want to do battle with the big female. She is one feisty little turtle.

All your turtles are beautiful and your enclosure is fantastic. I am still trying to figure out where to build my perm. enclosure.

Could I possibly get the recipe Jeff gave you to feed your boxies?

Thanks,

Kelly

I posted it right below Jaime77 post. He asked them same question. It's an easy to make food and they really go for it. You can substitute ground beef for venison if you don't have access to it.

It is not a strict recipe to follow, 3 main components ground lean meat, various fruits and veggies (what ever is in the fridge) and several different turtle sticks.
I also usually add an egg or two just to make the balls stick togather better.
I you can't use ground venison, turkey burger or very lean burger would be best. Vichris and I bowhunt so we have extra good lean healthy protien readily available.
I have made it with turkey burger and I have made it with lean hamburger, but they didn't go after it the way they do venison burger, maybe its a more natural, wild, "gamey" scent, all I know is they run to it and devour it, like it were nightcrawlers, and I garentee it is much healthier with the extra calcium and vitamins and mineral in the turtle sticks. I usually use Retomin, Wardleys, and HBH turtle sticks.

but I just listed the name brands of the ones I use, but again any vitamin, mineral, and calcium fortified turtle stick would do. I feed mine today and they mowed it down, like pigs at a pig trough. I use a long retangular ceramic plate, so it acually kinda resembles a trough, and they line up side by side to it and chow down, I should take a pic.

Yeah, I saw that post right after I posted mine. LOL I have alot of lean ground beef so that is probably what I will use. I plan on making some tomorrow as soon as I get some turtle sticks.

Thanks again,

Kelly

What's this recipe of Jeff's you mentioned using? I'm always interested in new boxie foods. Thanks.

One of my other hobbies is archery hunting. Last year I shot a really big bull elk with my bow. So I have alot of elk venison. I used 2 pounds of elk venison 2 small squash, a quart of strawberries, 1/2 quart of blueberries, a handful of raw spinich (sp), some romain lettuce and some turtle sticks, I cut up all the fruits and veggies in a food processor and mixed it with the venison then made then into golfball size balls and froze them. They love their food.

Pics of the elk here....
