Where to begin?

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, Im going to ask this anyway. When does one start keeping venemous snakes, and which, if any, might be the best to start with. Obviously one would want reasonably extensive experience with reptiles in general before working with venemous animals, but in general is there a specific animal that might be "low maintenance" (or lower), and perhaps a good starter venemous snake? Thanks.

It's not a stupid question, but may I humbly suggest that it's the "wrong" question.

Take a step back and ask an even more general question: "What should I do to prepare for keeping venomous snakes?"

And the most first thing if at all possible is to try to find someone in your area who keeps venomous, who will at least let you observe working and their brain, and ideal mentor you so you can get some experience with their snakes before you decide you're ready to keep them.

If that's not possible, there are things you can do ahead of time like getting a set of hooks and other equipment and using them with your non-venomous. Handling snakes with hooks is a physical skill that takes a bit of practice.

Then you need to think about getting secure caging and making sure you have an escape-proof room...with enough space to work and not too many places for things to hide.

Somewhere along the way you need to look into the legal aspects which vary from area to area. Let us know where you live (at least state and city/county) and someone can probably point you in the right direction.

Then start thinking about what snake to get...

Wow, I just can't type tonight. Let me try that paragraph again:
