The Nile and I had a breakthrough today.

rappstar609 May 22, 2009 02:38 PM

It has been probably 6 months since I have had my nile. He acts like a nile and hates everything which I have respected for the past 6 months. I can sneak a peek every now and then but if our eyes meet he is gone. He has grown exponentially as well, went from eating crickets to pinkies to fuzzies to adult mice to 2 adult mice a day in a matter of 6 months actually, he is a little over a foot now and I can't wait for him to get bigger and bigger.

ANYWAY, the breakthrough was that he let me feed him right off the tongs today, and he preceded to let me WATCH him eat. That was the first time I have ever actually SEEN him eat, usually I lay the food out and it eventually disappears. I think trust is being established and this was a major step in our relationship!

This can serve as an example for all of you that post the 'OMG my monitor is mean and won't let me handle him!' threads (which I used to do as well) until Sidbarvin convinced me otherwise, and look what happen. IT IS WORKING.

I was wondering about this lately actually. Is Larry the Nile monitor a ornate nile monitor? I heard they are more..human friendly then the regular niles or maybe it is wishful thinking. I mean how in the H-E-double hockey sticks is he so tame?

Yup, that's an ornate.

"Yup, that's an ornate."

They must have mellower personalities.

Good deal rappstar!
Soon you will find out how overrated the nile "meanness" really is, hahaha.
Another thing I should mention, is that about the time they begin to loose their shyness, is the same time feeding becomes an addiction to an interested keeper. This is when things become very fun since the growth rate will accelerate like you wouldn't believe and cage building will become a major pastime.

Get ready, hahaha.
Good luck
Roger
