how many could live happily in a 20 gallon tank with high and low areas?
I was thinking 5 or so.
Also - how much does one of the green toed leucs run for?
thanks all.

My first frogs were Leucs, and I started with 4 in a 20gal High. It seemed to be enough. I did loose one after a few months, but I think it was getting picked out, and I pulled it out too late. The other three are still doing great.
I guess 5 could be a bit much for a 20gal, maybe a 29gal might be better.

The general rule of thumb is at least 5 gallons per frogs. I have 4 leucs in a 40 gallon and they really only use half the tank. They rarely cross the "river" at all. Hope this helps.
If I go with 4...
For breeding should it be a 2.2 to cover my bets? should get at least one good brreder of each sex..
or do males or females have issues with one another.
If I go with 3 to give them good space and not overcrowd...should it be 2.1 or 1.2?
thanks!
also - any ideas on the green toed thing? reason is my local shop has a group of luecs in a tank and one has the green toes. was thinking of buying it before anybody else noticed. It is the same $ as the others.

Well odds are you will have to froglets so you will not know the sex. So just get 4 and you should at least get one pair out of that. That is what I did and I have 1 male and 2 females. I think the other one I lost was a male.

Really any group of D. leucomelas will do fine, I have never seen or heard of any problems with them in groups. As far as the green toes go, there was a shipment from Germany in 1998 that had some green footed D. leucomelas. I saw a few of them, which were not worth the price in my opinion, when they came in. The green wasn't very bright, and wasn't really anything special. They could be naturally occuring, or just a recessive phenotype, who knows. I wouldn't purchase it thinking it is a special morph without collection locality data first. Venezuela needs some work to dispell some of these myths (also the red D leucomelas one...). I'd also like to see if they yellow and orange are natural variations or different populations. Just some thoughts.

I have 2.1 Leucs which have been breeding all summer. Out of about 15 froglets so far, one is orange, the rest all yellow. The orange one is a deep orange, almost the same color as my orange galac so I would think that it is natural variation. The three adults are all yellow.
Mine are a little orange/yellow, but not the bright yellow some have. I need to move mine, they don't seem to like the hallway much.
