How to build a photo box?

coolluigi007 May 22, 2009 09:33 PM

I know I've seen it on here before, but I couldn't find it when I was trying to search it. I have black felt squares I was going to glue/staple to the sides for a background, but I was wondering if that would work or not. What have you guys done in the past??

Thanks everybody!!

Here's the one I made:

I used PVC for a frame, with a white sheet over it and a black fleece blanket over the bottom and back for background. Built a second frame a bit larger to hange lamps with regular 60W bulbs in them. I liked it because it was CHEAP and easy to do. PVC costs next to nothing and with a few elbow joints it was easier than legos to put together.

Here's a few picks to show quality (not balls, sorry, but I'll be pulling them out of tubs soon to take photos!):

Best wishes with your light box!

You can buy foam core 'display' panels at most craft stores or just by sheets of foam core at Walmart and use tape to attach them so you can fold them and put them away. Then its just a matter of using a black cloth or sheet for the base. (or buy a sheet of black foam core)

The display panels are basically pre made, so will save you some work.

Foamcore for those who never heard of it, is basically two sheets of paper card with foam sandwiched between. Overall its about a quarter inch thick. You can cut it easily by scoring with an exacto knife.

Then there are diffuser boxes which help take out the harshness of a flash and lights which is different that just the background for a picture. These are usually white valium paper stretched around a frame to break up bright light to eliminate the harsh glare caused by lights or flash.

I dont know what the Barkers and VPI use to take pics, but I have always thought(like evrything these guys do) that their photos have always been top-notch and best represent the colors of the snakes they are trying to display. I always get washout from the flash and have had the best luck in natural sunshine outside.

Not that this helps you, but if you sent VPI an email, I bet they might give up some pointers. They always seem like very nice people on here and in their books. Buy a 5k snake and I bet they would help you for sure - Lol! I,m sure this wouldnt be a requirement.
