Question about morph % splits in litters

phred136 May 22, 2009 11:26 PM

I just wanted to ask some of the more experienced breeders about what kind of morph splits they see in thier litters. I have been breeding normal BCIs for almost ten years with pretty good results. Last year a few of my het to het breedings met with mixed results. (although I did prove out five animals for anery or albino Would have been six but I lost a female.. boo!
Due to my lack of control when it comes to buying snakes i'm now dealing with much more complex genetics. I have been pouring over percentage outcomes for different breedings for the last three months. I guess my questions are how accurate is a "50% albino, 50% het for albino" outcome? (i'm only using albino as an example) How many morph litters do you see that are right on that 50/50 split? And when you get down to a 25/25/25/25 split (i.e. albino X DH sunglow) how does that tend to play out? Do you really see a decent split along those percentage lines? My worst results were with het albino X het albino breedings. Is that normal?
I realize that breeding snakes is just about as predictable as life itself. I just wanted to get some input from some of you guys that keep posting all of those cool pics. Thanks in advance for any input or ramblings.
Paul
P.S. Congrats to Bill Gaines on his snow litters this year. Some of my proven animals came from him.

Over a large sample size (many litters and many different breedings) the statistical averages will come closer to predictions. In a single litter those will almost never be right on. Sometimes good, sometimes not. For example in my DH Snow x TH Moonglow pairing, last year 4 babies, this year 16 more. So 20 total Odds on a Moonglow are 1/32, same for Snow. I have two each Snow and Moonglow. Odds on a Sunglow are 3/32 and I only got one.

Only thing you can do is put em together and hope for the best.
