Crusty Eyes?

mwrinkle May 23, 2009 03:17 PM

My collared had his crusted shut this morning, noticed he was rubbing his head. I took him to the kitchen sink and sprayed him down to remove the crusts but don't know why this would have happened?

That is a sign of trouble and you need to get him to a vet ASAP. That is a sign of either an eye infection or a full blown RI. Either way, he needs vet care and probably antibiotics. I would guess that he has been sick since you posted about him being lethargic.

I know your temps seem good. How is the humidity level in that tank?

Around 50%.

I have always thought that Collareds need a dryer environment, so my vivs are around 30%, but I will add that most of my collareds are from new mexico locales and westward, so they are species for which the natural environment is dry compared to more eastern locales. I would try to get that humidity down a little because it might be causing a respiratory infection. If you use sand, I would get him off of it for now, use paper towels, avoid moisture except in a shallow dish or to give him a drink, and see a vet as soon as you can.

Also, dipping a Q-tip in warm water is probably less stressful than using the sink.
