Where can I get mesh for fruit fly cultures? Culture help needed!

ram May 24, 2003 08:09 PM

I would like to get mesh which is used in fruit fly cultures. I have seen people take plastic deli cups and cut a square in the lid, then they place some of the mesh on it to allow ventilation bu prevent fruitflies from escaping. If you know where I can get some please let me know. Thank you. If you know where I can get good cups to use, recipes for bedding, please give me the website. Websites devoted to culturing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Eds Fly meat sells half a yard of the stuff they use. It works pretty well. I haven't seen it on their website but I haven't checked in a while, I just saw it at frogday and its in their order pamphlet thingy

Yes, Ed's carries it. You'll find it in the "products" category on their website. Here's a link to it.

Just cutting a round section just a little larger than the lid of the deli cup out of good quality paper towel such as Viva and pressing the vented lid down over it, works just fine, too. I then stuff the trimmings from the paper towel square into the media so it stands up a bit, giving the fly larvae something more to utilize for hatching out. Sometimes I poke in a section of the cardboard roll after using the last of the towel roll. Just don't use the light duty towels, though. They will tear before the fly culture is ready to be tossed.

I use wide mouth mason jars, and they work great. You can get a case of them very cheap at wallmart. I then use a folded paper towel with just the metal ring on the top.

Only issue I have had is I have 1 case of the non-wide mouth jars and they require a little less water.

just go to any fabric shop......they normally carry all kinds of stuff that can be used for the purpose you require.....check carefully on the prices though as you can get a good deal if you aren't particularly fussy about color etc....the other thing with the mesh is that it is re-usable.....you can clean it up with a soak in some anti-bacterial washing up liquid, followed by a rinse in water.....

I use Tyvek with wide mouthed canning jars. Tyvek is available through many sources including heavy-duty shipping envelopes or Tyvek suits.Works good for me!
