mandarin with eggs

RandyWhittington May 23, 2009 04:49 PM

I found this sichuan province girl with this clutch today. I'm definalty happy but I wish she would lay a few more at a time.
She had a good nest box but she chose to make her own nest under her water bowl. She has one of the water bowls with room under it that I cut a hole in the side so they have access. With the moist cypress mulch she liked it better under there since it's her favorite, regular hiding place.

Good thinkin' on the bowl. I've been experimenting with using "layers" to effectively create more square footage. Bowls waste a lot of floor space so doubling as a hide makes a lot of sense.

I really like them. The brand I posted the photo of is the best I've personally found. Their is a lot of room under the bowl and it's heavy so it doesen't move around or tip over. I use it with other species but they work especially great with the more secretive asians which do some serious nesting under them. With the deep bedding I put in with them, they will make it where they are really packed under the bowl by moving the bedding around. The actual water surface area is not very big in the water bowls but with the moist cypress mulch I don't need a large surface area in the bowl to get the humidity level up.
