hog eggs?

jock May 23, 2009 07:28 PM

so me and a friend are down here in orange beach ala, looking for snakes and we flip some eggs! they look just like hog eggs but they were rough, kinda like sand paper... are hog eggs rough to the touch or smooth? there were 15 or them!! they were found in a sandy soil, pine lot just off the beach.
thanks
jake

Are the shells hard or soft. Hognose eggs should be smooth and have a soft leathery feel. I have seen turtle eggs that have slightly rough surface.

Take Care

I am fairly certain that you have found racer eggs.

Sounds like racer eggs to me!! They have a texture that resembles salt on a pretzel.....kinda! Jeff

Well, racer eggs can be similar in size to hog eggs-they vary. The texture does sound like racer-I would hatch them and see!

Hmm-maybe Diadophis? I seem to recall that ringneck eggs are textured, and they often nest communally....

Yes, but ringneck eggs are long and thin. These are short and round with a sandy like surface

Hmm-well, they're definitely not hogs-hog eggs don't have the sandy surface texture. I'm out of ideas...

Couldn't be southern hog eggs? Maybe when she laid them, Sand particles stuck to it? Then again maybe not. But, Jock and I are out of ideas. Guess we will have to wait and see what comes out!

No way sand would stick uniformly to eggs like that-even if it stuck at all. And southern eggs are not that small, at least in my experience...

Could it be a broad-headed skink egg? Or perhaps glass lizard?

I found some eggs very similar to those and took them in and hatched them out and i got northern painted turtles out of them. I released them back into the wild. I was a bit suprised cuz most the turtles dig a hole and cover them back up. but these were just under a log surrounded by rotted wood shavings.

... I'd bet turtle eggs (don't turn them)
