when to start on fuzzys?

yankeeslover May 24, 2009 08:59 AM

was just wondering what the guideline was to start on smaller fuzzys? my corn is around 14 inches long now..Not sure how old he is, I had for around 2 months now...He is currently eating 2-3 pinkys at a time every week..was just wondering if I should move up to a smaller fuzzy?

If she is eating two or three pinkies at a time she is ready to go up to fuzzies.
Everyone has their own "schedule" but what I do is simple.
I start with one pinkie
when one pinkie fails to leave a noticeable bulge I move up to two pinkies.
When two pinkies faile to leave a noticeable bulge I move up to a fuzzy.
When one fuzzy fails to leave a bulge I move up to two fuzzies.
When two fuzzies fail to leave a bulge I move up to one hopper.
From one hopper to two and from two hoppers to one adult.
when I get to one adult I stay at one adult.
just the way I do it
I'm sure you could get 10 different "schedules" from 10 different people

Yeah, everybody feeds differently. A good rule of thumb, is feed prey items that are about 1- 1.5 times the girth of the body of the snake (mid body is a good place to base on, providing it hasn't eaten in awhile).

I tend to switch to rat pinkies around the time a corn snake can handle a large fuzzy (nearly hopper sized) mouse. Then stick with appropriately sized rats till they get to about rat hopper size (or smaller..depending on the overall size of the adult corn. I have 5' long corn snakes eating small rats, and 3 1/2 foot corn eating rat fuzzies) Though adults I don't' feed more than twice a month.
