Question reguarding gravid milk

toppy May 24, 2003 08:16 PM

I have a quick question for all you milk guru's out there.I have a female tangerine honduran that was cooled and bred after her 1st shed. she has put on alot!! of size to the last 1/3 of her body.It looked really disproportionate compared to the 1st 2/3 of her body but I am not able to feel eggs. she is close to her second shed ( really blue ) and Im hoping that this could be her pre egg laying shed but she is not eating now and seems to be slimming down alittle is this normal ( for her to slim down towards the end) I hope she'll lay if shes gravid in about 2 weeks her weight out of the cooler was 350g now shes @ 450g but maybe loosing alittle.
Thanks Chris
Ps. Do females put on that kind of weight when they ovulate or does that fattening up in the last 1/3 of her body signify eggs?

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts you've got a clutch coming! I don't weigh my breeders, but you've got the tale-tell signs of eggs in the near future. Put the box in before the shed, to be safe. I've had them lay when blue, and besides, it'll make her shed nice and easy anyway. Congrats, and let us know what happens.
BTW- Feeling the eggs isn't as obvious as you might think. Sometimes esp. on big gals, the back end just feels "squishy" more so than bumpy. Lay her on a flat surface and let her crawl through your fingers. You should feel a slight "give" in between each egg.
