The BR Couple Belly Pics(big difference)

PatrickBull May 26, 2009 11:13 AM

Ok here is the Black ratsnake couple from my post below. I got the belly pics I promised. Notice how the male has so much red and the female so much black and white.I put a pillow case in some pics to give you an idea of the size of the snakes. Oh and I'll throw in a good pic of the juvenile I caught on my kitchen floor!

The Male

The Female

The Juvenile KFC snake (lol Kitchen Floor Caught)

wow
that is a lot of red. That male is sharp.
When I first saw it I thought Texas rat but if you're in near Stuttgart, Arkansas then that's way over near Little Rock isn't it?
A long way from Texas.
we get them with some red, but nowhere close to that. Just red speckling around the saddles.
nice

Thanks Dray! Ok guysthis is my first timewith egg laying snakes. When should I add the nesting box. What naterials do you suggest. And should I remove the male or leave together.THey deem don't seemed bothered by each other. Also changed their whole bedding to bed a beast today. Any advice you can give me I'd love.

In about three and a half to four weeks the female should start to go into the "blue" when she does get a container such as a sterilite shoe box and put about 2 inches of moist sphagnum moss in it. put a hole in the lid and place this in the enclosure.
Remove the male. If the female is stressed she may not lay.
Could possibly resorb her eggs. I would also remove any other hides only leaving the water bowl and the lay box.
They will usually lay within 7 to 14 days after the shed.
Just keep an eye on her and when she lays her eggs you will get the fun of waiting for them to hatch.
When it gets closer to time for her to lay you will notice the back half of her body getting larger and if you let her crawl over your hand you can sometimes feel the eggs "bump" over you hand.
Keep checking in and we will walk you through it.

Thanks again Draybar. Your info goes right along with everything I have read. I just wanted to hear it from someone experienced with egg laying snakes I guess. Now I have to be patient and feed her up up nicely for the extra energy she'll need to produce the eggs. Patience can be such a bummer lol but I guess it makes iteven more special wihen the end result happens.

That is wild! All the Black Rats I've ever seen have had white or B/W bellies.

In his earlier post he said Stuttgart.
I knew it wasn't Stuttgart Germany so I figure it must be Stuttgart, Arkansas.
I think it's just about 30 to 50 miles Southeast of Little Rock.
BUT, I could be wrong....again

I'd say something like 50 miles from Little Rock. Maybe a liitle more. I see black rats with lots of red with white too in their pattern in this local. Then some with just white like the female. I'll be on the look out for more this summer and get pics if I can. I can't wait to see the young from these too. they have mated three times since I put them together that I have witnessed.

Here are some pics of the upper pattern Close Up. You can really see the red now that the snakes are cleaned up.

Males Basking.

Female Having a Soak.

Sweet looking belly on that male!
Feed that female if she will eat and keep us posted on the eggs when they hit the ground.
