Frozen feeder question???

Joel_Thomas May 26, 2009 06:50 PM

What is the longest amount of time that you would keep frozen feeders and why?

I vacuum seal my feeders and feel comfortable feeding them unless frost bitten.

Any feed back appreciated.

Joel

Enzymes are not stopped by freezing, but merely slowed down, so the quality of the food may diminish over time. This is not a safety issue, but a food quality conern.Basically you food items will degrade over time. I like to order food for only 6 months in advance.

Joel,
I agree with the one year timeframe if maintained below 0 F. Bacterial decomposition can be halted if maintained below minus 10 F, and enzymatic decomposition can be stopped if maintained permanently below minus 20 F. This is beyond the capabilities of home freezers so it is probably best to stick with the one year schedule.
