Has anyone ever produced a....

Pithons May 26, 2009 10:23 PM

Okay, I just bred a motley poss het albino to a moonglow. Even though I had a few die on me, I originaly got 29 live babies and one dead premi. Now out of those 30 babies, I got only one albino, where so I should have had 15. Now what is more likey, proving out my poss het albino snake buy only getting a rare 1 albino, or by chance that she is not het albino and I got a rare and possibly new line of albino? Also I want to add is, I dont think this snake is just an albino. Im 98% sure its actually a snow boa. I do know the anery gene is know to pop up every now and then from poss hets sold as normals, ect. My babies are all in blue pending thier first shed. But here is a pic right when I pulled the babies and a shot of the only albino, and in this pic does look very much as a snow. Again, i did not get any aneries in this litter. So Im a bit confused. Has anyone ever produced an albino, or anery, or any recessive gene from a visible parent to a non het(or normal). Too bad this albino has a servere spinal problem, which I will probabley have to put down. This albino is a male BTW.

I dont know exactly but I know if you breed a Sunglow to a Motley
(or some other combo) you will gt normal Hypo's but No Hypo Mots.
Weird... Maybe in this case it messed up the whole gene 'stats'
Have a great night!

Sunglow to Motley is the one way to get Hypo Motley het Albino
If I understand the scheme of things that's the only way.
Otherwise you would never see Sunglow Motley Boas.

To comment on Pithons dilemma that white Boa looks like a Snow
to me as well.

A Sunglow x Motley will make Hypo Motleys het Albino. Breeding a Hypo Motley to a non-Hypo mate won't produce any Hypo Motleys. At least in theories, so far.

If it is a snow then you should have seen Anerys in the litter as well. It could be that you lucked out and the motley dad is het Snow(just got terrible odds in the litter). It could be sperm retention if the female was ever with another male. Another possibility is automatic parthenogenesis.

Best of luck with the rest of them. Did you get a few Hypo Motleys het Snow?

Pithons May 27, 2009 05:29 AM

Mom was the motley poss het and Dad was the moonglow. And the Moonglow was the only male with Mom. Like I said, the babies are in shed. I will take new clean pics this weekend after they shed. It is wierd. Yes, I did get 4 hypo motley het snow as well as 4 motley het snows. I will definatley be holding the hypo mots back to breed with some a couple of my snow females. I guess only time will tell what I got in this litter, as i plan to breed Dad back to Mom next winter.

Awesome litter!

Just think, if the female "does / did" carry both genes, you'll be the first to produce the "Snow Motley" (to my knowledge). Not too shabby...lol. Definatley post more pics after they all shed.

Good luck-

very interesting problem... Either you just got really bad odds with the one albino or something else is going on (although I would doubt a new strain popped up from unrelated animals?). Deff. breed that mom again and see if you get more albinos.

One thing that I was thinking while reading your post is that it is just a really light albino and not a snow. It's too hard to tell from the pic but since there were no anerys it makes me think it's not a snow.

I posted a picture below of a very light albino I produced in '03 that was also born a little premature. (She was a couple months old in the pic) You can see how light she is, her color was almost translucent, except for the light pink in the last few tail saddles, might have passed for a snow, especially at birth before the 1st shed.

I am not trying to rain on your parade, I hope it doesn't come across like that. I am just speculating.

Either way, congrats on the litter - hypo motleys het snow, outstanding! Please post more pics after they shed.
