Dumerils Monitor behavior

jjburg May 26, 2009 11:59 PM

Are they naturally shy monitors compared to others? Do they tend to hide all day or are they active and out most of the time? I know their husbandry and care but how about their personality? Thanks.

my Dumerils monitor was very personable and wouldn't freeze while anyone would be around or loo at him, i only heard him his twice, the first was when he first saw a pinky and didn't know what to do with it lol. he was also was out and doing something crazy or relaxing in his water bowl, that seemed like his favorite spot of all in the cage.

i forgot to add mine was captive bred

Both of mine (cap bred) have no fear, in fact my last one seems to have discovered a new game - when my hand goes in the cage for what ever reason, he runs up my arm and sits on my shoulder. They have tons of personality in my experience and I've had a dozen different kinds.

I cared for a half-grown Dumeril's for a couple of weeks while she was between owners. She was moderately squirmy and skittish, but I would expect that of any juvenile, females especially. Mostly I remember how much she loved crayfish.

they can be very shy but one they become acclimated they can be great I had one who wold clime up my arm. if yours is hiding all the time give it some time to settle in do not try handling it to calm down offer it food from tongs and hopefully it will calm down if as far as everyone who had captive bread dumerils who did you get them from I only know of 2 people to have bread them in the us and only 1 on a regular basis and they are ben adler and DrZRIDER

Thanks and i got him from ben siegel as an acclimated ltc juvenile. Ive had him for 2 weeks hes doing great all the temps and humidity are perfect. He eats everything offered like crayfish and shrimp. And every now and then he comes up to let me pet him and a couple times he went on my arm. But usually he hides most of the day which sucks because i love to just watch him.
